New Price Retail

New Price Retail operates award-winning homewares retailer House, specialty salon haircare retailer Price Attack, Australia's fastest growing health, beauty and lifestyle retailer Priceline, and the new combination of retail and pharmacy Priceline Pharmacy. The company has developed specialist retail skills in a shared services structure that enables it to provide efficient supply chain management, marketing, buying, finance, administration and centralised distribution, in company, joint venture and franchise environments.

CHAMP, together with investment partners, ABN AMRO Capital and Investec Wentworth Private Equity, and management acquired New Price Retail in February 2004 for A$107 million from New Clicks Holdings, a South African retailer listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.  The management buy-out has substantially enhanced New Price Retail’s responsiveness to local growth opportunities, with improved speed and flexibility. In its most recent financial year ended 31 August 2003, New Price Retail reported an operating profit of $14.8 million, up 58% compared with an operating profit of $9.4 million for 2001/02. Sales for the year ended 31 August 2003 totalled $497 million, up 40% on comparative period sales of $350 million.

In October 2004, the business was sold to Australians Pharmaceutical Industries Limited(API) for A$167m providing CHAMP Private Equity with a 1.75 times return on its money at IRR of approx 120% in a little over 6 months.
